Excursions Programme 2006

Musselburgh Walk

Sunday 7th May starting at 2pm

This excursion will examine the buildings of Musselburgh, both old and modern, and discover the origins of the stone used to build them. There have been settlements in Inveresk since the Iron Age and the Romans established a cavalry fort as an eastern outpost of the Antonine Wall. Many of the stones built into the later buildings show the marks of the Roman mason's tools. Musselburgh has many buildings, churches and monuments worth seeing. Pinkie House in the grounds of Loretto School and many of the old houses in the Wynds show a more rustic manner of building.

Neet at Inveresk at 2pm. Take the main road straight through Portobello and Joppa to Inveresk. After crossing the new bridge over the Esk, turn sharp right along Mall Avenue and then turn right into the car park by the Old Roman Bridge. Walking distance will be about 2½ miles on pavements, streets and paths. Wear sensible walking shoes. Finish back at the Roman Bridge about 4 to 4.30pm. Public toilets available, cafes are also open.

Fellows of the Society are asked to confirm their intention to take part with the Secretary. Guests are welcome when there are sufficient places.
